A Week and a Half of Phlegm, Ginger and Zelda
Musings of a sick person playing a 6 year old video game
Happy end of November Sketchbugs.
As the title suggests, I have been battling a persistent cold the past week and a half (I still have a small cough even 2 weeks out). My days have been spent coughing, sneezing and napping, with a generous sprinkle of hacking phlegm into tissues and towels nearby. Needless to say, the sickness came at the best possible time: in the middle of Thanksgiving break and after a lot of illustrator events.
Before getting sick however, I went to the Society of Illustrator’s 43rd Annual Original Art Show to see my framed artwork from the Book From Far Away and meet some of my favorite children’s book illustrators and authors. It was such an honor to be in a space full of imagination, heart and love for the medium. I also got to have a fun interaction with a family in Central Park before the party, so that was cool!
I even got to get drinks with Substack stars
and afterward. We all share the same agent, the amazing Rebecca Sherman so in a way we were like the Sherman Clan.Plus the day after, my good friend Sander Goldman, an incredible storyboard artist who works on Rick and Morty, came to speak to my students at UArts about the animation industry and his own journey. I got to be a proud friend watching him explain the intricacies his job.
After all those busy but fun days came the sickness. It started off with a small tickle in the throat, and then snowballed into losing my voice for a few days on top of a small fever. I had that pop up event with Children’s Book World in Media, PA but had to cancel due to how dire my health was. It felt terrible to cancel but it was the responsible decision. I would have made my cold worse and could have infected the other authors/illustrators at the event.
Overall, the last few days have been packed with ginger, lemon, honey and Zelda Breath of the Wild. Yes, I know I’m 6 years late but it felt like the right time to start this monumental game as I had nothing else to do resting in bed. I’ve been enjoying it immensely as I drink herbal tea laced with honey and eat liters of soup filled with ginger and scallions.
The world of Zelda feels rich with life and I have been savoring my time in each area of Hyrule climbing, swimming, and paragliding (I would say horseback riding but I don’t really like that mechanic).
I find myself wandering, taking in all the shrines and korok seeds along the way. It’s almost a miracle I’ve been able to complete parts of the plot with all the time I’ve spent just cooking meals, fighting monsters, and taking pictures of the local fauna. It’s almost like fantastical glamping haha. Before I end this post and go back to nap, here are some little doodles of how I’ve been feeling about the game thus far.
If you want more Zelda thoughts let me know in the comments! I’ve been enjoying this game much more than I expected and there is so much to be said about every character.
Still thinking about those chicken wings
